In 2023, the City of Lorain completed Phase 1 of the Pellet Terminal Remediation and Redevelopment Project. This phase addressed environmental contamination on more than 20 acres of waterfront property at the site of a former iron ore pellet terminal. The City received a $4,026,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development and contributed $1,700,000 in local funds. Work included the excavation and removal of contaminated soil and the construction of a new parking lot, which serves as an engineered control for remaining contamination.
Phase 2 of the project will extend Broadway to the pellet terminal site and install utility infrastructure to support future development. The project will also repave and reconfigure the entrance to the “Hot Waters” boat launch and improve traffic flow in the surrounding area.
With an eye toward future redevelopment, the City ultimately seeks to make the Pellet Terminal site an accessible public destination with venues offering open space and a range of uses that may include, but are not limited to recreation, entertainment, cultural programs, business and conferencing, retail, tourism, and hospitality. The City and our project partners are committed to working with local organizations and state and federal agencies to ensure the successful funding and implementation of these critical projects.
