The City of Lorain offers a temporary termination of trash billing for vacant properties. In order to better serve the community, and in an effort to improve how we conduct business, the City of Lorain Utilities Department has one of three forms to aid in this process.
It has been determined that there are several properties within the City limits that have been vacant for an extended time period or long term. These addresses will only be required to submit a temporary termination form once a year, each November to cover the following calendar year. Trash exemption forms will need to be submitted no later than November 15th to avoid trash charges for the subsequent year. (Example to avoid trash charges for the year 2018, all forms need to be submitted by November 15th, 2017.)
Rental property will be required to submit a form every six (6) months, January through June, and then again, for July through December. Forms need to be submitted 30 days prior to effective date.
Snowbirds or seasonal suspensions will be required to submit an annual form. Trash billing will be suspended for the time period indicated on the submitted form. Forms need to be submitted 30 days prior to effective date.
In order to qualify for temporary termination of trash billing, a residence must not use more than 1 HCF (100 cubic feet or 750 gallons) of water usage for the time period indicated on the form. A minimum vacate period of 30 days, from the beginning of any given month to the end of the same month, is required for a temporary termination of trash billing. All requests for temporary termination of trash billing will be monitored and routinely audited for legitimacy. Trash charges will not be added to the monthly bill. The monthly bill will consist of the minimum charges for water, sewer, and storm sewer.
