Distinguished Service Award Presented to Officer Jeff Smith

The below Distinguished Service Award was presented to veteran Police Officer Jeff Smith during roll call for his fast actions in the apprehension of a homicide suspect:

"On May 3, 2011 you responded to a shots fired call in the 1400 block of West 17th Street, in the City of Lorain. It was immediately ascertained that the call involved the homicide of a fifty year old male. You made a tactically sound decision to start checking the area and observed a 17 year old youth that raised your suspicions. With the assistance of other officers you detained the subject and took him into custody. Later, the victim's car keys were located on his person, a jacket that he had shed was found, the weapon used in the murder was located, and the suspect gave a full confession. Five or ten seconds could have made a big difference. However, due to your quick response and diligent effort, this homicide was solved.

There is no doubt that this was truly exceptional police work. However, what makes it extraordinary is that it was routine for Officer Jeff Smith. What never ceases to amaze me is the passion and enthusiasm that you bring with you each day; even after 25 years of service you go out each day and epitomize the true meaning of being "a good street cop." You proudly wear Badge #1 and lead by example. You not only bring credit to yourself and your family, but you certainly enhance the image of the Lorain Police Department. Congratulations and thank you! "
